English defines class...does it??

Actually....I had almost stopped writing my blog....but after some incidents...I thought it was necessary to put forward my views.....

I know many people who think that speaking in english makes them of a higher class....these are not the people who dont know or understand marathi (my mother tongue) but they think that speaking in marathi is very down-market (that's what "they" say)

There are many young people(14 above ) or as a matter of fact even some middle-aged people....who are not ready or rather I must say disgusted or feel low-class speaking their mother tongue!!! English is a language accepted globally, I agree....but that doesn't mean people become high class if they speak in English.....I have many friends who speak in English just because they are comfortable with it....but they do it with due respect to other languages....but these so called "HIGH CLASS" people just dont care....today.....I have many friends....who refuse to call their parents 'aai' and 'baba' i.e. mother and father in marathi.....they prefer mom and dad over it.....this is just an example...there are loads of other instances...

These are the people who would curse leaders like Raj Thackrey....because what he says is true though I dont justify the methods which he uses.....I would like to appeal to all the people that please speak in whatever language you wish but NEVER side-line anybody or just make fun of somebody just because that person doesnt speak english....

I can see this situation in big cities.....I hope that this is not the situation in other states of our motherland and hope that people will atleast stop their superiority complex....

  6. Language is just a tool for communicating your thoughts. It is the content of your thoughts that is important, not whether the tool is English or Marathi, I think.

  7. We maharashtrians should not be ashamed of speaking in marathi,it is something we should be proud of...Marathi literature exists back to 1000 A.D. and maybe before.English language is no doubt most well known, but it surely does not show your class or your knowledge...

  9. i also know such people who just speak english for just show off...they just think it is high class.....these people dont know how rich the marathi culture and the language....i aceept that english is the global language and is very very important in our future...i advice these people to see a marathi cultural programme which i recetnly saw at Yashwantrao Chavhan...hope this would change the minds of these people....and i think MARATHI language is much more high class than the ENGLISH language in INDIA...remember that u r an INDIAN....u r born on this earth of INDIA

  10. Aniket,

I am sorry but I dont agree with you on one point that marathi is more high class. What I meant to say that there is no language in the world which can be defined as high class or low class. My only point was that we should have respect for all the language and thank you for reminding the point about India.

  14. yup i totally agree with you here...i know people who are totally ashamed to talk in marathi..in fact, even acknowledge the fact that they are maharashtrians..this seriously disgusts me...i mean, dude!!! whom r u kidding? On the other hand, there are hardcore marathi speakers, usually from marathi medium schools...who kinda disrespect the english speakers...i.e kinda ridicule/criticize them..for eg, they are like,"kay english faadtiye" or crap like that...i think being over protective abt ur language is kinda lame..a person talking in english doesnt HAVE to be a marathi hater or smthng like that. Language is a communicating medium, at the end of the day. Most of us have been grilled with english since a tender age and hence v think in english...and end up talking in the same....but the realization is still there, that yeah, marathi is my mother tongue...and i swear, i'm proud of it... also, Raj Thakerey, i have seen people baselessly fight against him...when they dont even know much but are influenced by media and other ppl...in fact, almost ALL the points he has raised are completely valid...of course, his methods are wrong..but i respect him for what he is and his skills.

(lol this is turning into a mini-blog but yeah....i can seriously talk about hours on this topic...its just too personal)
